Midsummer-ish garden update
Jan. 16th, 2019 09:35 amSeeing as I'm hanging out here supervising the inexhaustible and incorrigible St Nicholas Cage, foster kitten of doom (and also cuteness):
- corn didn't end up doing much in the way of corn things, though it looked promising for a while :( but that's ok, you gotta try these things right
- trombone zucchini takeover of the washing line is going well; there's one growing right in the middle of where I have to walk through to get to the main part of the garden so I'll be picking that one sooner rather than later as I anticipate rapidly getting sick of clonking my head on it
- basil, lemongrass, fennel, perilla, peppermint, thyme, and lemon balm all doing beautifully
- first tomatoes might be starting to ripen!!
- yarrow is flowering!
- purple beans are delicious and I'm looking forward to the green ones too
- first round of capsicums/chills are starting to flower
- I think one eggplant plant has managed to avoid being swamped by beans and comfrey so that's hopeful
- pumpkins have not been a success this year
- fucking whiteflies are a fucking menace and responsible for most of the plant loss I've had >:( gotta be more proactive about control but it's tough in the hot weather because most of the things recommended aren't safe to apply in high temperatures bah humbug
- might take myself off to get some alyssum and marigold seedlings to help with attracting more predatory ladybugs etc
- shadecloth FTW it is saving many of my plants from the heatwave we're currently having! worth the hassle of putting it up
